An external hard drive is just like the one inside your computer, but outside of the case. They are pre-made, or you can buy a hard drive and an enclosure, then make your own. For one reason or another, you may have picked a computer whose storage capacity you've outgrown. It's full to capacity with files and programs, and you need room to expand. The first example is to use your external hard drive to add expandability to your computer. This is true if all of your PC's hard drive bays are filled, and especially if you are a laptop user which has only one hard drive bay.
A second example is the use of an external hard drive as a common storage drive. You can connect it with your PC, configure permissions and share-ability, and start saving, and sharing various files. For example, you can share pictures, MP3s and video files and save them. Using it this way will let you liberate tons of space on your computer's local hard drive and to share files with everybody in your house network.
Another possible use for the external drive is for saving important documents. For example, you can scan wills and deeds, insurance information and leases, bank account as well as credit information among others and store them all on your external hard disk. You can also have pictures of all your valuables, and place these safe in your outer hard disk for future reference, if it is important then it is worth saving your outer hard disk. You can then store this hard drive in
